UPDATE:Death toll rises to 29, rescue operation underway,
12 people have been killed by the snowstorm called Hudhud in Annapurna Region of Nepal.More than 400 people are still missing in the mountainous area of Manang and Mustang districts along the Annapurna Circuit (Round Annapurna) route.Twelve bodies have been recovered so far including 8 foreigner tourists who were trekking at different routes of Annapurna Trekking Region.As October is the peak season of trekking in Nepal, thousands of trekkers are trekking in the region.
Manang has been covered with thick layer of snow starting from Taal, the lower entrance of Manang Valley and upper region of Mustang is also covered with thick snow.
According to the Chief District Officer Baburam Bhandari, 4 bodies have been found in Mustang district.Those deceased in the storm are 2 Polish citizen, 1 Israeli and 1 Nepalese national.22 other trekkers have been rescued by Nepal Army.Those bodies were found after the high pass of Thorong La (5416 m) who were hit by the sudden storm in between Thorong La Pass and Muktinath village at 3800 m.Thorong La Pass lies in between Manang and Mustang valley which takes more than 8 hours walking.Trekkers should have been blown away by the storm as the trail after pass is steep downhill with gravel surface.
Initially survivors of the storm had reported that 12 people were killed in the region but only 4 bodies have been recovered so far.
In Manang district 8 people have been killed according to Chief District Officer Debendra Lamichhane.Those deceased are 3 from Naar village who are locals and were trapped in the snow storm while herding their Yaks in higher area of pastureland whereas 5 foreigners have been killed in Fu village including 4 Canadians and 1 Indian citizen.3 Canadian and a Nepalese national have been rescued from Fu village.Naar and Fu village are categorized as the redistricted area of Annapurna Region.
Rescue service is underway in the region with the help of Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, Locals and government services workers.
