Sri Lanka won the first South Asian Women’s Basketball Championship held in Kathmandu on Saturday.
In the exciting final, Sri Lanka thrashed Nepal, 15-11, 20-13, 17-16 and 23-9 with the difference of 75-49 in the final match held at Covered Hall of National Sports Council at Tripureshwar Kathmandu.
Earlier Nepal and Sri Lanka both had defeated 3 other teams to reach the finals.
Nepal couldn’t lead any of the four quarters and lost to Sri Lanka.
In another match played also on Saturday, Bhutan beat Bangladesh.
Although the winner teams didn’t have any cash prizes, Nepal Basketball Association has decided to honour Nepalese Basketball team, who became the second in the competition, with Rs. 1,50,000.
There were 5 South Asian Teams participating in the first ever south Asian women’s basketball competition that included Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives, Bhutan and Bangladesh.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Bhim Rawal, President of Nepal Olympic Committee Jeevanram Shrestha, Member-Secretary of National Sports Council Keshav Kumar Bista have awarded trophies and Medals to the participating teams.
