CPN UML vice chairman Bidya Devi Bhandari has been elected as the second president of Nepal who is the first female president of the country.
During the election held in parliament on Wednesday, CPN-UML candidate Bhandari secured 327 votes against Nepali Congress candidate Kul Bahadur Gurung who secured 214 votes only. Out of total 597 parliament members, 549 took part in the voting, while 48 voters remained absent. Eight votes were deemed invalid out of the 549 votes that were cast.
Ruling parties CPN-UML, U-CPN Maoist, RPP Nepal, Forum Loktantrik and few other fringe parties had supported Bhandari.
House speaker Onsari Gharti Magar announced Bhandari’s victory as the new president of Nepal.Gharti has congratulated and wished for her successful tenure as new president.
After the election Congress candidate Kul Bahadur has said that election is the best practice in democracy which will institutionalize the new changes in the country. Gurung has also congratulated the newly elected President.
Born in Mane Bhanjyang-2 of Bhojpur district, Bidhya Bhandari-54 was involved in politics from 2035 BS through youth League of then CPN (ML).Bhandari served as minister of population and environment during 2054 BS and the Minister of Defense in 2067 BS.
